Well, lookie lookie… Guess who finally ended her daily drama hiatus? Me! ME! MMMMMEEEEEEEE!!! I feel rejuvenated and extremely happy when I started Great First Wives. Words can’t describe how much I missed watching dailies. I squeed so hard the minute I started the first episode. Am I weird? Nah, I’m just a huge addict of dailies *giggle*. The crazier it is, the better I feel! And Great First Wives not only brings in the great goods to the table, it brings out the craziness that really… I believe it has surpasses the craziness of Crazy Love! In a good way? Yes! In a bad way? ABSOLUTELY YES! Do I like it? Are you kiddin’ me??? I LOVE IT TOO MUCH THAT EVEN THOUGH IT MADE ME SO ANGRY, I ENJOY IT SO SO MUCH!!!
Now where do I even begin? Oooh, the dilemma. I have so many things to say. Most of it are profanity words. *shrugs* I don’t know if I’m aloud to beep beep beep beep beeeeeeeeep because yeah, that’s all I have in mind right now. Great First Wives really knows how to raise your blood pressure level! 70 episodes later, I still need a punch bag, cat toys and anything else I could grab to toss it to my tellie. Yeah, this story is that bat-shit crazy. But one thing though that makes it worth watching is that the story is very compelling! The story and plots are moving, there are no dwelling on the past. No wastin’ time, chingu! The writer really knows what we watchers want and she moves the stories forward so that none of us will feel bored.
So…. *rubs hands* ja, let’s get started, shall we? I really don’t know where to begin, to be honest. I have too many things to say but my fingers are failing at typing and my brain is refusing to work with me. I blame jet lag! I will do my best and I hope I do justice on these three great wives *wink* aka the three mouse-keteers!
Yoo Ji Yeon and her basturd Professor Ex, Yoon Il Hyun
The image of Ji Yeon in the beginning was a picture perfect woman. As a professor wife, she had every right to be proud of. A great home. A money-making professor husband. A darling daughter. But the flaws in her marriage crawled in on her one by one. It started with her discovering that her perfect husband has an affair with his TA, who is also a tutor for her daughter. It gets uglier when the news leaked out that their darling daughter is not Professor’s blood daughter. Well, he knew what he got in when he married Ji Yeon. But he made a huge mistake by telling it to his vixen mistress and now she hold on to that information dearly and threatened Ji Yeon to divorce her husband. In the end, Ji Yeon divorced him with a promise that he would share the amount of their apartment sales equally. Sure, that did not happen as expected. Vixen manipulated Prof. Ex into taking it as a compensation for what ji Yeon did to him! He knew it was wrong of him to do that but instead, he obliged to her demand. But what did she do? Vixen has no clue on the real truth but always assumed that she knows all. This is the time I really, really want to smear hot chili pepper all over her mouth and *beep beep beep* snap her head off!
Now, vixen insisted of going on and on and on on Prof. X’s extra care for his wife and daughter and she won’t let Ji Yeon alone even after their divorce. I really don’t understand why, she really felt as if she deserves all the happiness in the world. Il Hyun, on the other hand, blinded by love for his young mistress hated his ex-wife tremendously but yet couldn’t keep himself away from her. Somehow his guilt from leaving his daughter made him constantly reaching out to his ex. He became insanely guilty when he found out Ji Yeon worked as a cashier in a grocery store. But when he found out that she accepted a position in an international company and that the President (Cutie X) knows her, Il Hyun became aggressive and angry again. He was approached to model for the company’s product but due to his lies on his marriage, they company sacked and fined him for lying. Angrily, he blamed it on Ji Yeon instead! *angry face*
Ji Yeon’s confidence has helped her survive this nasty break-up. However, due to constant threatens by the witch vixen, she decided to revenge for what the two cheaters did to her. With the help of the two other great wives, together they pressured the university with articles, pictures and documents of the cheaters. Their work became fruitful when the two cheaters were forced to resign from the university and humiliated among the students and peers. Now, the story has moved on not only focusing on the cheaters’ post resign, but also with the Cutie X. He is her daughter’s real father. He was drawn to the girl and realized that Ji Yeon had named her daughter with the name they have once thought of when they were a couple. He wanted to be acknowledged as the father but Ji Yeon really made a great point. He was nothing but a sperm donor. He had it rough but can’t let go as he knew that she was forced to keep the daughter because of him and his family’s objection to their unity.
So what now? Will Ji Yeon reveal to her daughter her real father’s identity? Will Ji Yeon eventually accepted the Cutie X as her daughter’s father and eventually, a hand in marriage? What would happened to the cheaters? Hmmm… I don’t know. We just have to keep on watching it! *wink* Ooooh, not forgetting… The road to happiness is always never easy! Now they have to face Cutie X’s delulu lawyer! She claimed that she and Cutie X will be united as husband and wife soon! Yeah, right! A lawyer is always a liar, right? *rolls eyes*
Jo Kyeong Soon and her womanizer cheater Golf Pro, Han Gi Cheol
Kyeong Soon does not have the average wife image. In fact, your face will scrinch at one glance of her from head to toe! She is a gangsta mom! A dropout high school, she never left her gangster image she’s been carrying in her teenage years and continues to be ill-mannered, rough and ordinary throughout her life. Her husband owned an indoor golf place. Basically, Kyeong Soon and her womanizer hub are butt-load rich! But Gi Cheol is never satisfied with his wife. Her image does not meet his and is constantly embarrassed of her. Gi Cheol is a notorious womanizer and has cheated numerous time. But why he keeps going back to his gangsta wife. Wae? She is the reason to where they are today. She is his lucky charm. Pffft! All their wealth started from her. She’s a true business person without her realizing it. Though Kyeong Soon is rough, but in fact that she has a good heart towards her mom and her late in-laws, she succumbed and fooled by her sweet cheater husband each time he apologizes to her. Thus, they never split up as she continuously forgiving him. But in reality, she’s afraid of separating from him. Gi Cheol constant nagging for not giving him a son to inherit the business was the cause of their marriage stress. Seriously, how in the world such mentality still exist today?
But Kyeong Soon forgiving ‘tude never stop her womanizer from cheating. His new victim? His golf instructor that works for him. However, little did he know that she actually plotting to get money out of him. First, the mistress manipulated him into sleeping with her and made him falling for her hard. Later on, she manipulated him into buying a car. Before he knows it, a condo! Now we don’t know much of her purpose of scheming him although her partner in crime has a beef with Kyeong Soon. I supposed knocking Kyeong Soon and Gi Cheol out of their wealth was the main motive. A 2-in-1 deal that no one can resist! The mistress was smart and chained him up really good when she said that she’s pregnant with his (non-existing) son!
While Kyeong Soon dealt with his mistress, she also had to deal with his past. He impregnated one of his women and her brother threatened for money to keep their mouth shut. At the time, besides busy flirting with his mistress, Gi Cheol was in la-la land in getting himself nominated to run in an election. He sold his and Kyeong Soon’s building to get himself elected without her knowing. But what did he get? Not only he was not nominated and lost all his investment money, his mistress ran away with a nearly million Won! What a stupid man! Seriously, this is what he got for cheating and refusing to believe in his wife! What a douchebag!
However, on the other hand, we can’t blame Gi Cheol alone. His gangsta wife not only appeared gangsta, but her undesirable look turned him off. She does nothing at home but eat, watch tv and sleep. Yeah, any man would say no to a lazy wife! So partially, she is part to blame too. Now what can we expect from these two? She finally divorced him and received half of the assets. But gangsta mom loves his womanizer hub dearly so I doubt we will see them going separate ways in the end. Their relationship is pretty much sets in stone. But how further would she go to prove him that she’s worth a wife he should have be loyal to? *wink*
Oh Jeong Mi and her childish gay(ish), Lee Seong Ho
Jeong Mi is a very dedicated and loving wife. She not only takes care of her childish husband, she also house her childish mother-in-law, too! They both ran a hairdressing business. During the early episodes, Seong Ho constant disappear from the business was a problem but never really explained better. Also, he constantly spend his time with his friend, Charles. Their relationship was so tight that I almost found it to be very gay-ish. Seong Ho was never interested with Jeong Mi, sexually. Jeong Mi is older than him and she’s biologically ready to be a mother. But his constant refusal to fornicate (pardon my language but i can’t help but using the word!!!!) with his wife made us strongly believe that he is gay!!!
Jeong Mi’s constant battle is unlike the previous two wives. Her main struggle is her childish husband. He was a gambler, though, and used up all their savings for his personal interest. When Jeong Mi found out that he and Charles were trying to partner in business, she was livid. They lost a big chunk of money and she had to borrow from Kyeong Soon to pay Ji Yeon back. But those days are over and they have moved on from investing into Charles’s business into opening a travel agency. Yeah, I know… From hairdressing to travel business, two completely unrelated business.
Other than acting very childish like, her mother in law is quite lovely. She, too, wants a grandkid of her own but whenever Jeong Mi frustrated with her son, she took her son’s side instead not knowing who’s at fault. I really can’t stand the mom-and-son relationship in this one; they are almost gang up on each other and attack Jeong Mi coldly. But I thought she wants a grandkid, so what the hell??? *shakes head in disbelief*. They are lucky that Jeong Mi has a lot of patience. Anyway, Jeong Mi is on her last resort to get on Seong Ho’s nerves. She pair up with Charles to make Seong Ho jealous. At the time of my watch, her attempts was still mild but it seems that from the preview, they both geared up their moves to more aggressive attack on Seong Ho!
When I saw that preview, I was laughing so hard. If Seong Ho still not fall for it that his wife may actually leave him for Charles, I think I can conclude that he is just fit to stay single for the rest of his life with his mom. I mean, how can he not be interested with his perfect 32-25-32 bride? Otherwise, he is definitely a closet gay! So writer-nim, what is it going to be? Will these two become a parents one day?
What keeps this show going (and keeps me craving for more episodes) is the level of friendship of these women! They have been friends since teen. Sure, they have ups and down and almost never agreed with one another. But one thing they stood up in the crowd is their bonding and supporting of each other when needed. Except for Jeong Mi and her relationship with her childish husband, the three help one another in good and bad times. When Ji Yeon struggled to move out from her home suddenly, Jeong Mi rushed to get money that she borrowed to pay Ji Yeon back. And when that came to a dead end due to Seong Ho’s gambling problem, Kyeong Soon stepped in and offered her place even though she and Ji Yeon were never in good terms since high school.
So where do I think this show will end up? For sure that Ji Yeon will never go back to Professor Ex. The cutie X is worth her time and future stake since he is her daughter’s real father. And that, chingu, it’s a done deal for the two. We can almost certain that Jeong Mi will not leave her childish husband too. She has no bad intention but only to find ways to kick it a (nasty) notch! *giggle*. Take that, Seong Ho! BUUUUUT with Kyeong Soon and Gi Cheol… now these two can be a wishy washy relationship. She loves him so, so much! He loves her only when he realized that she is pretty (after losing weight) and successful. Two reasons I do not want them back together: 1) she needs her freedom and she does it well on her own; and 2) she will ends up going through the same cycle if she and Gi Cheol are back again. With that, I really want to see Kyeong Soon to walk out from this series a happy (divorced) woman! Is it hard to accept? Think Cheongdamdong Scandal!
Great First Wives is by far one of the best daily dramas I’ve seen in years. It is very entertaining and well balanced between humor and angst. I do not even find it remotely boring nor to even consider of dropping it. I was hooked from the get go. The only downside is that it is a 120-episode drama and this may get extended for whatever reasons. But I can assure you that if you decided to get adventurous and curious, give Great First Wives a go. I’m telling you that MBC could be my favorite network for dailies. I enjoyed Apgujeong Midnight Sun so much and I certainly enjoy this and A Daughter Just Like You (review to come). I promise you won’t feel bored watching this drama; if not anything, you will feel entertained and excited by it! If you need more convincing, please head over to Bel’s awesome review of Great First Wives! *grins*
