Believe it or not, this is the only drama I am currently watching! Yes, my life has gone nuts with all the travels I have been doing it since June! It is not over yet! I am flying out in the next three weeks. At this point, if I want to start any, I must start ongoing dramas that close to be done. I really do not have the time to squee with my Tlists and it sadden me. I never thought my life would end up this way. I might pick up short Japanese dramas to watch soon.
Now, where do I even begin with Mr. Sunshine? It is hard to explain because this drama is perfect from every angle. It keeps getting better and better! I don’t even know where to begin… It pulls all my emotion strings at once. I just can’t. Believe me when I say this because I am not a fan of Lee Byung Hun. I know he excels in movies but not in dramas. Honestly though, Mr. Sunshine has proven me wrong. He is great and his acting is not bad (by my standard). Of course, I had hoped that he will have more expressive expressions but hey, I am not going to complain much.
I am inexperienced with Kim Tae Ri’s acting. This is my second time seeing her after The Handmaiden. Her innocent face works perfectly in this drama. She is amazing! She is able to give us happiness and sadness through her face, her eyes and even her body language. And for some odd reason, Tae Ri and Byung Hun debunk the myth I created of these two. I had thought that this pairing is not going to work due to age difference and style. I can’t believe I am wrong! Now, I ship the two of them hard!
So let’s go back to Mr. Sunshine! This is the story of Choi Yoo Jin. His parents were slaves and was murdered by the owner. Right before his mother took her life, she asked Yoo Jin to run as far away as he could. Yoo Jin did as he was told and seek refuge in a clay master’s home. There, he met Joseph, an American gentleman. He followed him all the way to the US and built his new life as an American. Fast forward to years later, he came back to his motherland as a US marine officer, Eugene Choi.
One night, he came across a shooter. He witnessed it all but couldn’t catch a glimpse of this person. And on that very night, he passed a young lady and she smells like gun powder. He sensed that she is involved with the shooter or she is the shooter. But who is she? You will need to watch it to know her identity. As for him, he came back to South Korea not only because of his duty, but to visit his past. However, he soon realized the country is now dominated by foreign colonies. Who do you think he will be sided? His birth country? The US? The Japanese has colonized few of the residents and the area became a playground for yakuzas. While it sadden me, this is the truth.
I am not sure where Mr. Sunshine is taking me to but I am happy with the direction of this drama. If you realized, I am only talking about Eugene but not Tae Ri’s character, Lady Go Ae-Sin. Her character is quite unique and mysterious. I really do not want to spoil it because her journey is not as painful as Eugene. However, she’s full of hope for the country, the people, for the women, and for herself. Lady Ae Sin is quite thoughtful and mature for her age. She yearns for something bigger than her life. She is a fighter just like her late parents.
Mr. Sunshine is created beautifully with stunning cinematography, talented actors and actress and a wonderful story. But the best part of this drama is the chilling yet beautiful lines and one stood up to me is “You’re just a noble fool living in a luxury”. How powerful is that? It gives me a chill! Another bone chilling conversation was made by the main characters. Eugene said “just because you save that one woman, it doesn’t mean that it’ll save Joseon”. Ae Sin replied “I have to save her. Because one day, that woman might be me.” Whoa. How do I go back to my normal life now? I also like the way Ae Sin said sunlight, sunset and sunshine with a hopeful face. She blew me away! I don’t care what you think. Drop everything! This drama is a must watch!
