Currently Watching: Laurel Tree Tailors

Wow, it must be something in the water with KBS right now. They continue to produce great weekend family drama. Five Children was a great hit! I enjoyed it so much! If I could rewatch, I would! I was skeptical with Laurel Tree Tailors simply because of the title! And the drama poster was not to my liking. Like Five Children, I waited for reactions on the Twitter before I started it. The reviews were extremely favorable. I knew immediately that it is a cue for me to stat it. And frankly, 46 episodes later, this show does not fail me at all. Bravo to KBS. Again, the next drama has a big shoe to fill in!

Where do I even begin with this show? Unlike Blow Breeze, this show makes me laugh. A lot! I did not like the beginning, though. It started a meh. This drama started with Man Sool, the president and owner of the Laurel Tree Tailors shop. He decided to run away from his family and his work and left his family in disarray. I thought it was a very bold yet selfish move by him. Needless to say, though, his disappearance united the family together. His apprentice Sam Do moved back to the city to run the tailor shop. His once arrogant son divorced his wife and started working in the shop, too. Yeon Shil, the junior apprentice, worked her hardest to escape her almost marriage to Gi-Pyo, a gangster she owed her life to. Tae Yang, Yeon Shil’s friend, struggled after his girlfriend left him for a wealthy man. Lastly, Tae Pyung, once a famous singer had to face his reality that he is no longer known to people.

All these five characters unite because of Laurel Tree Tailors. The plots and twists in this drama really made it really enjoyable. Yes, it has some frustrating moments but it is way better than any other family and daily dramas. The coupling in this show is to die for. They all have their own dynamics. Sam Do and his bossy wife Sun Nyeo are the hardest couples to watch. Sun Nyeo is older than Sam Do and wanted a child. But he constantly avoiding her because really, she really is an embarrassment to him. Physically and mentally. Dong Jin fell for the apprentice, Yeon Shil. Of course, he did not fall for her immediately. He called her pretentious while all she ever wanted was to get along with her master’s son. Tae Yang had the hardest love life. His ex-girlfriend dumped him for a rich man who hired him just to torment him. He found love unexpectedly. Through his ex’s boyfriend’s sister! Small world, isn’t it? And lastly, our talented Tae Pyung. Dong Jin’s sister, Dong-Sook has been a fan of his music since she was in her 20s. She’s been so supportive of Tae Pyung. The road to their coupling hit a roadblock when her mom hooked her up with a self-made stingy, rich man.

The side characters’ stories are as entertaining as the main leads. I really can’t find any other way to hate them. And I really can’t give you any reasons to hate this drama. The only thing I dislike was that the show got extended by another 4 episodes. I don’t know what the reason was but I am actually okay. I haven’t seen this week’s episodes but I am certainly looking forward to it. I know some watchers are sick of the main couple, Dong Jin and Yeon Shil by now. I am not but I do get it. Her loyalty is questionable, sometimes. My favorite couple of the bunches is Tae Yang (aka Kang star) and Hyo Won. I look forward to their scenes all the time! And his proposal to her was to die for. I will never eat cotton candy the same way anymore.

Laurel Tree Tailors, or known to others as The Gentlemen of Wolgyesu Tailor Shop, is a must watch family drama. I will seriously miss this show when it ends. Really, the show really brightens up my weekend. Yes, I am a fan of family weekend dramas. I may sound bias but hey, I think it is worth a shot. You won’t be disappointed! If you do *pouts*, please holla me!

Just Watched: Erased, Seondal & Never Said Goodbye

Yeap, I’m on movie marathon again. Seriously, if not for Bel, I wouldn’t be watching these many movies. I have another movie to watch but currently, my son and I are too absorbed into Indiana Jones series. It will come later… But for now, here are my quick thoughts on the movie I just saw this week.

Erased

w3rprqm1_68a104_fErased feels like a time-traveled movie. This 2-hour show tells a story of Satoru, a manga artist by day with a part-time job as a pizza delivery guy. Satoru has this magnificent ability that I wish I have. He’s able to see what is going to happen and turn back the clock to prevent the incident from happening. Literally. Within seconds. But one day, he came home and found his mom was stabbed. He went back 18 years back to figure out who the killer that kills children in which one of the victims, Kayo, was his friend. When he thought he saved Kayo, he realized Kayo remains dead in the present life. He then went back again to figure out what happened. Would his second attempt of saving Kayo eventually saved his mom? This thriller movie is not suspenseful enough but brilliantly acted by Fujiwara Tatsuya, to my opinion. The children scenes were the best part of all. I wish I have the time to read the manga because I am sure not all of the stories get adapted to the movie. I’m a bit hesitant to recommend this drama, to be honest.

Seondal

y4be7md3_031e43_f

I can’t believe what I saw. This movie was hilarious from start to finish! Kudos to the person who wrote the novel that sparks the making of Seondal. I truly enjoyed it! My son and I laughed so hard this morning. This movie is about Seondal – Kim Seon Dal, that is. He cheated life once. With his good looks and partnered with few friends, he became the infamous swindler in the country. He’s able to steal many things and disguise himself as a eunuch, a king, a monk and even as a woman! Trust me, Seung Ho was beautiful as a woman! One day, he and his team decided to steal tobacco from a powerful and notorious merchant, Sung Dae Ryeon. This gets dirtier when on top of that, Chinese is involved in this corrupted trade. Seondal is no hero but being caught in between Dae Ryeon and the Chinese, he indirectly saved his country. The movie was predictable yet enjoyable. I highly recommend this movie!

Never Said Goodbye

mln6wodl_abd191_f

Lee Joon Gi in a Chinese movie? Sign me up! And he sounds good in Chinese! I could understand what he said, and not just mumbling the words. Never Said Goodbye was never on my radar until Bel put it up for me to watch. I did not know that Joon Gi would do Chinese movie. Since he’s currently famous as Scarface in Scarlet Heart: Ryeo, I don’t mind watching him in a different setting. And truly, Never Said Goodbye is different. Unlike the first two movies I saw, this love story is somewhat confusing. I’m not a fan of a flashback-style movie. The movie is about a Korean exchange student played by Joon Gi, who fell in love with Xiao You, a Shanghainese. The story started with how deeply in love they are but then something happened that prompted them to break up. It was his decision to do so and she could not understand why and her life went spiraling down since he left. And then the movie started to tell us the story of how they met, his life before her, her life before him, and also answered to why he wanted this breakup. It’s hard for me to recommend it since I’m not a fan of back-and-forth plots. Another odd thing is in the beginning, Joon Gi was speaking in Chinese. Later on, he speaks in Korean and the actress in Chinese. It reminds me of Love Me If You Dare. That’s a no-no for me… *sigh*

Just Watched: The Himalayas & Orange

Yeap, I was able to squeeze a couple more movies during my flight! I was on a roll! So here are my reviews:

The Himalayas

D45Xkko3_138189_f

This movie really touches me to the core. I cried a lot! The men bonded over their mutual interest! To hike the Himalaya! This is a courage citizen stories of a different kind. The goal is one! To get on that peak! And another peak. And another! But I loved it. Based on true story, The Himalayas is definitely a movie you need to prepare your heart. This is a hearty movie that everyone should watch it!

Orange

W3rPypm1_b2c9c6_f

I was contemplating whether I should watch Orange. But I did and quite liked it. My only beef with this movie? It was a bit too long. Too many fillers, I really couldn’t stand sitting for too long. But overall, it was a great movie concept. Naho and Hiroto are both married. They decided to write letters to their younger selves to save their depressed friend, Kakeru. Basically, their letters are meant to change the world. But I didn’t get the ending. They were able to save Kakeru but what happened to their future? Naho and Kakeru dated prior. Did their lives change too? The acting was great. The emotional part was extremely strong especially by Kento as Kakeru. I’m always drawn to his movies and this is another great one!

Just Watched: Wonderful Nightmare

Wonderful_Nightmare-p2

Ok, I finally saw a movie that is worth my time!!! Seriously, most Korean movies I’ve seen lately bore me to death. The plots were either incomplete, ridiculous or just lame. And most of the time, they love luring watchers with pretty men! Sure, but can they act? But Wonderful Nightmare is different! When Bel and Grace told me to watch it, I knew I could trust them. These two ladies are avid movie watchers. I have two eonnies that know what are they talking about!

Wonderful_Nightmare-003

Wonderful Nightmare was released back in August. I’ve heard of it from grapevine but never paid attention to it. I was extremely busy with real life and buckets after buckets of dramas. *shrugs* I have too many. Really. I’m a bit ashamed of myself now. But hey, this is not the time to feel down because Wonderful Nightmare is extremely wonderful and great! Please do not be fool by nightmare as it was not a nightmare at all. By the end of this movie, I was left with tears. Happy tears! I just could not believe the twisted ending…

Wonderful_Nightmare-006

Wonderful Nightmare told a story of a successful lawyer named Yeon Woo. One night, she had an accident that left her in coma. In her coma stage, he met an angel. He introduced himself as Director Kim. Kim sort of guided her coma life and offered her a second chance at living. But before going back to herself, she woke up as an ordinary housewife to Sung Hwan and a mother to Ha Neul and Ha Roo. Yeon Woo panicked. As a successful career woman, she is all about in control and this new life totally ruined her. She worked hard to adjust in this new life and it took her series of turning events to turn herself into loving the life she is in. But when Kim told her that her time is running out, she had a panicked moment. She grew attached to the kids and this made me sad. When she woke up, Sung Hwan and the kids are nowhere to be found. But later, she realized that what she needs is a change. So when she browsed her old photos, she discovered that Director Kim was her late dead! Oh my goodness, what a shocking! But the best news of all was that on her way to visit her dad’s site burial, she met up with Sung Hwan and the kids again! Yay!!!! *claps*

Wonderful_Nightmare-002

I think her late dad was secretly matchmaking his daughter *giggle*. At the same time, it sort of give Yeon Woo a reality check. She’s been focusing deeply into her career and neglecting her life. There are more to look forward to when you have a family. In the end, this movie did not only made me cry, it gives a true meaning that there are more to life than just going money and status. I highly recommend Wonderful Nightmare. It’s funny, smart, witty, passionate, with heart, and deep. I can see this as drama… A really good spin!

Currently Watching: A Witch’s Romance

Witch's_Romance-p2

Gosh, when was the last time I’m up all night watching romcom drama? Seriously, I just can’t remember. Wait… Sorry, I lied *covers her mouth*. Bride of the Century was my last romcom. I think. Whatever, this brain is old and just can’t keep up with all the heat we are going through here. But the heat will not stop me from marathoning (wait, is that a word?) A Witch’s Romance. This recently completed romcom drama is my current crack-a-lacking drama! Hmmmmm, it’s not crack-a-lacking! It’s my head-over-heal drama *nods*. Yeah, that’s much better. I freaking love it! This noona romance drama could be THE drama of 2014 as last year’s was I Hear Your Voice, THE noona romance drama of 2013. Well, unless if there are more noona romance dramas coming out this summer… I declare this one is the best one thus far!

Witch's_Romance-0001

A Witch’s Romance is actually a remake of Taiwanese drama, My Queen that was aired in 2009. But from what I heard, A Witch’s Romance is more satisfying that My Queen. Knowing how Taiwanese dramas can be draggy in terms of episodes and unnecessary plots, I believe them… The only reason why I avoid Taiwanese dramas… A Witch’s Romance has 16 episodes only. It’s a gem for me! You know how I hate any dramas with episodes above 16, unless if they are daily dramas. What? I’m not biased *sticks her tongue out*. I just have good taste *laughs*. Okay, okay… enough joking. Let’s get this review started now!

Witch's_Romance-0007

A noona romance drama can be a hit or miss. When I started this drama, I was very…. I REPEAT, verrrrrrrryyyyy skeptical. It is not easy to make noona-deongsaeng love believable. Both actors must have great chemistry. And they have to convince us the audience that they are doing it genuinely. Hmmmm I wonder if me and Yoo Seung Ho could work out this May – December ship *rubs chin*.  I’m being serious! Quit laughing! It works in this drama… the OTP is 14 years apart (in reality, they are 19 years apart!) *gasp* Oh My God! He looks his age but she… She looks…. Hmmm okay she looks her age too. But really, would you be in this kind of relationship? Exactly what Baek Ji Yeon, the main character, is thinking. Yes, she is attracted to Yoon Dong Ha. He is good looking. He is a great kisser. He has good manner and that’s important, y’all! Unfortunately (or fortunately for those real cougar out there), he is almost 15 years her junior. Hell yeah I would think hard if I wanna dive into this kind of relationship.

Witch's_Romance-0004

So the first half of the 16 episodes were merely about them going back and forth with their feelings. He told her not to tempt him but at the same time he want to be tempted *rolling eyes*. She told herself he’s too young but at the same time her heart beats 186 mph *rolling eyes again*. Well, you know how that goes… I am currently on the second half of the show and this is where things get heat up a bit. Her ex aka the polar bear came back after MIA for 6 years. He left her at the altar basically…. *coughs Basterd coughs*. And now, Dong Ha’s emotion going wild and really trying to step up his game but knows his place and time. *shrugs* *sighs* I’m sorry puppy… She’s moving on with him.

Witch's_Romance-0005

And that’s all I can tell you as of now. Tonight, I’m starting episode 11 and hopefully this show will end on a good note! It has to be, right? Just throw polar bear with some poison salmon and be gone! *evil laughs* I can’t believe I just said that! Amuden, A Witch’s Romance is a great watch. It’s lite, witty, funny and can make your heart skip a beat. I like it a lot! Well, I lied. I love it a lot! WUV!!!! I think you should watch it! Really, it’s great summer romance! *big smile*
